Descent Video Review

Myriad Board Games
[media  id=9 width=600 height=350]

What’s Cool:

  • Lots of characters to chose from.
  • Nice 3D pieces.
  • Map pieces that can easily be used for other games.
  • Good battle system.
  • Your characters can have familiars.
  • Nice fire attacks and magic attacks.

What’s Not:

  • Dropping items makes them disappear into a puff of smoke.
  • If the game master is new to the game, be prepared to wait a while while he reads.
  • The game master has a much harder time to win at this game.
  • Some rules need to go be reviewed in the forums.
  • There are cheesy scenarios… so write your own!

Neutral Information:

  • It feels like playing a traditional Pen and Paper RPG.

Great Game. Has been a staple game in my gaming group for a while. Can take some commitment and is time consuming but if you have the people and the time, can be a real fun alternative to D&D.

Descent is a fun game to play, but I haven’t wanted to own it. If someone in your gaming group owns it, there’s no need to pick it up yourself. If nobody owns it, consider picking up a copy (especially if you are into the fantasy genre). The rules can seem complex at first, but after you learn them the tools of the game make it easy to keep track of what’s going on with only a minimal amount of effort (see the combat dice and myriad of encounters). The component quality is amazing and the artwork is top notch, though some of the female gamers I have played with haven’t enjoyed the mildly risqué art of some of the women characters. That said, my wife enjoys the game and we generally are up for a game of Descent if it is suggested.

Then after “JA” I personally give it a 8 because I find it balanced : first missions are tutorial like, so not to get players frustrated. Following missions are much harder but still do-able by almost-new-players. But I bet your players will never beat expansions scenarios, JA, so I recommend you to buy at least one and give that game a better grade ;) This game has everything to please anyone. It’s pretty, it’s one of the best dungeon-crawlers of our times, it’s simple, it’s good old school fantasy, it’s fast-paced, not repetitive if you buy the expansions, there are thousand amateur-made scenarios on FFG website… I’m pretty sure I’ll overlord some games with my grand-children in fifty years :D

this would be a REALLY fun game is the game was not excruciatingly unbalanced. I think it might be impossible for the game master to win.

What I liked; Coop games are always fun, combat mechanics are great, game pieces are well built, and reminds me of diablo :)

I give it a 6/10 could be an 8 or higher if they balance the game.
