Chaos isle was alright for me. But I only played maybe 2 games.. so I definitely need to give it more play time before I make final judgment.
Another thing is that I played it as 2 player so that might have taken away a little from it?
There isn’t a lot of player interaction in this game unless you become a zombi player and the game relies heavily on dice.
As a long time gamer, I’ve played and owned my share of fantasy card games, most predominately, Magic the Gathering and Legend of the Five Rings. I’ve recently had the pleasure of playing a new card game that is quite unlike the others. Chaos Isle is a fresh look at fantasy card games. It takes a watered down genre and adds some flavor to it as well as some new twists.
There are two distinct types of artwork to comment on. Much of it conveys it’s meaning in a direct manner, looking to shock the player, and oftentimes, drawing a chuckle or two. The creature art is excellent. The artist has captured the essence of Chaos Isle in his style. The images of the zombis appear slightly shrouded but surprisingly crisp, as if the creatures are preparing to jump out of the card at you. Items, event cards, and characters are amateurishly drawn, but the creators of the game clearly did this to have a touch of humor attached to them. I applaud them for sticking to their guns by using the same artist throughout their three expansions. The lettering and text are very easy to see and the rule books are well thought out, making it simple to follow and learn the rules.
The cards themselves produce no sound effects however it is worth noting that there is plenty of laughter and occasionally shock after an unexpected card shows up, such as The Creator; a card that consistently produces plenty of groans from the players.
The game plays very smoothly. There are a variety of different ways to play Chaos Isle. You are not locked into one set style. With the expansion set, the game play only improves rather than getting bogged down like in many fantasy card games. There is nothing quite like getting that Shotgun for your character or getting the chance to save some penguins from a fate worse than death.
As one player said about Chaos Isle, “a breath of fresh air,” I can only agree. Chaos Isle revives the stagnant drudgery of fantasy card games and opens up a whole new world for enjoyment at the table that has long been lost.
