This game is brilliant. It’s on my top ten list of favourite board games, and I liked playing it even before I really got into board games as a whole. The mechanics are engaging, the interaction encourages improving diplomacy skills, and the little pieces representing towns and cities add to a rural theme by being wooden and simple themselves.

The only thing I could think of to improve the game is to have armies be able to take over other players’ towns and cities (a concept that I believe has not yet been implemented by any expansion, which is quite disappointing with one of them being titled “Cities and Knights”).

Catan is the start for many people trying a good boardgame after Monopoly…
It has a nice game system what will appeal to many people.
There’s a good balance between luck and strategy and a lot of interaction with other players.
Love this game also on the internet where there’s a comlete Meta game where you can have you’re own house…
If you don’t know Catan…just try it and you’ll know why we all love it.

This game is a classic. Must play. It can go on a bit too long and the trading and luck game mechanics could turn people off. But for anyone just getting into boardgames, this is the perfect game to get your feet wet.

Catan is great; but its expansion (Cities and Knights) is too complicate and not suitable for the beginners. Catan is a very breakthrough idea in the boardgame. Many boardgame geeks are starting from it.

This is the game that started it all for me!

I love this game because everyone gets to play until the very end. Even though it’s lucky driven, there is still elements of strategy. It’s a great way to bring in new commoners to the genre — especially if you’re afraid that other more complex euros might scare them away.

I like that this game can bring in any person of any age and is easy to learn. We play this game often still. In fact, we’re playing this game with the seafarers expansion again this weekend because a friend of mine wants to beat another friend who won (his first game too!) lol.

Some people might not like this game. But for a lot of people, this was the game that brought them into the genre.

I’m one of them..

The base game is a lot fun and is a good gateway game for those who have only known Monopoly…*cringe*

Fairly easy to teach however, the trading mechanic is pretty much done away with when playing with experienced players. I mean, do you really want to help the enemy?

Great game and a solid way to start your journey into all things euro ;)

This game is fantastic, the board is ramdom and the expansions gives it an incredible lifespan compare to games with the static board. The fact that all players are involve during all the turns truly helps to keep interest in the game going. Also it is a very good gateway game to get people starting on the hobby!

This is the game that started it all for a lot of people. The game is easy to learn and has the players actively involved throughout the game, whether it’s their turn or not. There is plenty of replayability with the modular board so no two games need be the same.

There is an element of luck in the game, but good strategy and negotiating will generally win through in the end. Pretty much every non-gamer I have played this with has gone on to get the game themselves.

the original game is extremely entertaining, the addition of expansions and making random game boards makes this a new experience everytime!
