Thunderstone & Wrath of the Elements Card Game

Wrath of the Elements Expansion:

What’s Cool:

  • Over 500 Cards.
  • The deeper you venture into the dungeon, the harder it is for you to fight.
  • The “Light” concept is pretty good.
  • You build your deck as the game progresses.
  • You can use XP points to level up your heroes.
  • Defeated monsters give you gold, xp, and some give you bonuses as well.

What’s Not:

  • The card stats are plain circles with numbers in them. (Most are purple).
  • No real player interaction.  ( It has a solitaire feel to it ).
  • Some cards will never be bought and are weaker then others.
  • The clean up can take a while.

Neutral Information:

  • It’s a Card game, don’t let the box fool you.

I had the chance to play this game recently when AEG came to one of my FLGS’ board game nights, and I have to say… I enjoy it a lot more than Dominion. I think its mostly just because I enjoy the theme and how the mechanics of the game play into the theme (especially the light mechanic). I also think the games feel more different from play to play than Dominion, because Thunderstone forces you to experience certain sets of cards. In Dominion if you dont like the Witch card, you never have to use it, and you only have to worry about it possibly being used on you. In Thunderstone, you cant just choose to not deal with the monsters, or not hire at least one hero. I mean you could try but it probably wouldnt go well for you. The game just feels more like I’m actually doing something, whereas Dominion just feels like gathering cards so I can gather more card to win. Thunderstone has that feel to it to, but its somewhat hidden under some ACTUAL THEME, which makes this a much better game to me.

Plus this game plays well solo and Dominion is not possible to play solo that I know of.

    Welcome aboard, Giancarlo!
A nice expansion to a not-so-nice game. This game is good, but its rules are not as elegant as the other deck building games, especially Dominion. And as mentioned by you guys, the cards really need some work.
    Thank you for these reviews!

This is a really good alternate when your tired of playing Dominion over and over, I hope to see some expansions in the near future.
