Days Of Steam Board Game Video Review

Days of Steam: “Days of Steam is a great game that was released at Essen in 2009 by Valley Games.  The game  includes rules in both English and German. Days of Steam designer Aaron Lauster has done a wonderful job on taking the ideas of a traditional train game and made something that will appeal to the most hard core gamer and the new comer to board gaming. This fantastic title has elements of the complex, strategic train game and creates a fun environment of tile laying and goods delivery that is played usually within an hour. “ -Valley Games-

What’s Cool:

  • Nice production quality.
  • Awesome rule book.
  • Easy to teach and play.
  • Custom tracks every game.
  • Fast paced and short games.
  • Has trains AND tiles :)

What’s Not:

  • Completing loops is kinda hard, since you can only play 1 tile per turn.
  • Placing a town, can make other players take that good instead of you.
  • The houses in the towns should have the same color roof as the town tile.

Neutral Information:

  • There is an expansion for this game:

Thank you for your excellent review.
The trick with making loops is to set the track up in such a way that if your opponent completes a loop he/she does it along a path you want your train to go. They are then faced with the choice of letting you complete the loop and receive the point or completing it themselves and getting the point but saving you a turn. Between experienced players the game is a race for points. Saving just one turn to deliver a goods cube of the fourth color to get 13 points can be the difference between winning and losing and more important then receiving one point for a loop.

When placing cities it can be helpful to watch where other trains are, how much steam they have and to move your train down the track a ways towards where you plan to place a city. As passing a train costs an extra steam point you can sometimes block trains with little steam from passing yours.

Thanks again for your review. It is an excellent production.

As always, your reviews concisely describe the game and your thoughts. I hadn’t even heard of this one, now I will be taking a closer look. Seems like it may fit well as a filler/family game.

Ok, a nice little tile game. However, I think I’m going to pass this one, because I’d rather play more “heavier” train games.
Nice review guys! You are awesome, as always.
